The patient is a 13-year-old child diagnosed with chronic osteomyelitis of the leg. The condition has progressed over time and resulted in severe bone infection, bone destruction, and structural instability.
Further complications include:
• Pseudoarthrosis (non-union of bone)
• Significant bone defect
• Functional impairment of the affected limb
• Difficulty in walking (non-functional limb)
Despite prior medical management, the infection and bone damage have persisted.
Clinical Findings:
• Chronic bone infection (osteomyelitis)
• Bone loss/defect
• Abnormal mobility at fracture site (pseudoarthrosis)
• Limb deformity
• Poor weight-bearing ability
Diagnosis:
Chronic osteomyelitis of the leg complicated by pseudoarthrosis and significant bone defect, resulting in a non-functional limb.
Recommended Treatment Plan:
Due to the severity of infection, bone destruction, and poor limb function, surgical intervention is recommended.
The orthopedic surgical team has advised amputation of the affected limb as the most appropriate treatment to:
• Eliminate chronic infection
• Prevent further complications
• Improve long-term quality of life
• Allow for future prosthetic fitting
Estimated Cost of Surgery:
The total estimated cost for the surgical procedure is €1000.
Prognosis:
Following successful amputation surgery and proper rehabilitation, the patient is expected to have improved overall health and potential mobility with prosthetic support.
